Tempranillo 95%, other estate varieties 5%.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eThe producer\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTorre de Oña is a 50-hectare estate in Rioja Alavesa owned by La Rioja Alta, and Finca Martelo is its single-vineyard wine: one plot of 60-year-old vines at 630 metres, planted north to south with a natural mix of Tempranillo, Mazuelo, Garnacha and a little Viura. Since 2005 the estate has mapped and subdivided every plot, giving each its own vinification and ageing under winemaker Alejandro López. The grapes were hand-picked into 20 kg boxes, cold-soaked for seven days, then fermented and put through malolactic in barrel with weekly bâtonnage. The wine spent 24 months in American (80%) and French (20%) oak with four traditional rackings, then six months in tank to settle the blend. 2016 was one of the longest harvests in La Rioja Alta's history, with fine weather to the end, and gave wines of unusual balance, ripeness and depth.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eFood and drinking\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGood with roast lamb, grilled pork, game birds and hard cheeses.
