The finish is long and surprisingly elegant for a wine of this weight — 84% Zinfandel, 8% Carignan, 8% Petite Sirah.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eThe producer\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFred Peterson was vineyard manager at Ridge from 1985 to 1990 before founding his own winery in Dry Creek Valley, northern Sonoma, in 1987; his son Jamie has been winemaker since 2006, and the two work to a philosophy they call \"zero manipulation\". The fruit is estate-grown on Bradford Mountain, six and a half hectares Fred cleared and planted in the 1980s on top of a 385-metre peak overlooking the western edge of the valley. Red clay soils, sunny days and cool nights give small, thick-skinned, intensely flavoured berries with the peppery, dark-fruited character of mountain Zinfandel; the vines are head-trained, dry-farmed and picked by hand, and the only vineyard treatment is sulphur dusting. Fermentation is with cultured yeasts and punch-downs, and the wine spent 25 months in barrel, a fifth new French, a fifth new Hungarian and the rest neutral.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eFood and drinking\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGood with roast poultry and pork, red meat off the grill and hard cheeses. Ready now, and will hold for a few years yet; give it half an hour in a decanter and serve at 18°C.
