The 74-hectare estate in the Monti subzone of Chianti was bought by the Stucchi Prinetti family in 1846 and is now run by the sixth generation, siblings Emanuela, Guido, Paolo and winemaker Roberto. Montebello is their homage to traditional Chianti, which could once contain up to a hundred varieties: nine recovered native grapes in near-equal parts, grown at 250 to 330 metres on limestone-rich clay with south and east-facing slopes. The vineyard has been farmed organically since 1995 and certified organic since 2003. Each variety is hand-picked and vinified separately with wild yeasts in five-hectolitre open-top tonneaux, macerated on skins for 40 to 60 days with manual punch-downs, then aged 12 months in French barriques (no more than a tenth new) and a further six to eight months in cask after blending, all in a gravity-fed cellar.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eFood and drinking\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGood with lamb, game and rich pasta dishes. Ready now, and will hold for a few years yet; decant for an hour and serve at 16–18°C.
