Founded in 1885, it flourished until Prohibition and then stood abandoned for more than 60 years, until Gil Nickel bought it in 1979 and began the long work of restoring it; the estate now owns 80 hectares of vineyard across three Napa Valley sites. The blend draws on vineyards in Calistoga, Oak Knoll, St Helena, Stags Leap, Diamond Mountain and Yountville alongside the estate's own plantings in Oakville, where gravelly loam soil gives supple, fine-grained tannins, and where morning fog off San Pablo Bay followed by warm afternoons and cool nights stretches the growing season. Each variety was picked and vinified separately, fermented with selected yeasts and given an average of twelve days on skins, and the finished blend then spent 17 months in French oak, 62% of it new and the rest second fill.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3\u003eFood and drinking\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003eServe at 16-18°C.
