Grenache 100%.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3\u003eThe producer\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003eChâteau de Saint Cosme sits in Gigondas in the southern Rhône and has been in the Barruol family for over 500 years; Louis Barruol took the estate on from his father in 1992 and is known among the region's winemakers as the 'Genius of Gigondas'. The property lies at the crosspoint of two geological faults, and Le Claux — old French for clos, from the Latin for 'closed' — is a 1.8-hectare parcel enclosed by a cliff, recorded in the first vineyard land registry of 1902 and already old by then, planted after phylloxera somewhere between 1870 and 1880; it was due to be pulled out in 1914 and survived only because the men had gone to war, and Louis' grandmother, having lost two brothers, kept it afterwards. Its Miocene clay and limestone marl on the Font des Papes alluvial fan, with sharp gravel at the surface, make the estate's most Burgundian Gigondas. Whole clusters were fermented with wild yeasts and minimal intervention, then aged twelve months in French oak casks of which 20% were new, 50% second passage and 30% third or fourth, and the wine was bottled unfiltered and certified organic. In 2022 a long heat wave and drought slowed the vines' growth and ripening, and the reds came in balanced, with good fruit and fine tannins.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3\u003eFood and drinking\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003eServe at 16 to 18°C.
