Karmrahyut 100%.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3\u003eThe producer\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003eArmenia is considered the birthplace of wine, and holds the oldest known winemaking ruins, dating back 6,100 years; ArmAs, founded by Armen Aslanyan, was set up to revive that legacy, with winemaker Emilio del Medico working only with estate-grown native varieties. The 180-hectare estate of vineyard and orchard sits on the 45th parallel in Aragatsotn Province against the backdrop of Mount Ararat, its ungrafted vines planted between 700 and 1,900 metres in soils made up of some 30 layers of volcanic, limestone and clay; 300 days of sunshine a year ripen the fruit and cool summer nights keep it fresh. Karmrahyut, whose name means 'red juice' in Armenian, is a teinturier variety that thrives here, and the depth of colour in the wine shows it. The hand-picked grapes gave free-run juice only, which settled naturally at 12 to 14°C before fermenting with wild yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel; the wine then rested five months on its lees for texture before an early bottling.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3\u003eFood and drinking\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003eServe at 8–10°C. It handles more than a pale rosé would: grilled lamb kebabs, roast chicken with sumac, soft washed-rind cheeses and spiced vegetable dishes. Drink now, over the next year or two, while the perfume holds; no decanting needed.
