Georges Lavaud bought the estate in 1960 and his son Hubert now owns it and makes the wine, farming to HVE Level 3 with grass cover crops between the rows, tilled soils and no copper. The name comes from the gravel in the vineyard, which sits alongside sand over the clay that dominates the right bank and holds water through a warm summer; vines average 30 years and are planted at 6,000 per hectare. Fermentation ran two weeks in temperature-controlled stainless steel with twice-daily pump-overs, then 18 months in stainless steel and cement tanks, with no oak at any stage.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3\u003eFood and drinking\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003eServe at 16-18°C. Good with duck confit, a beef casserole, mushroom tart, or a plate of charcuterie. Drinking now and over the next two to three years; no decanting required.
