Pinot Noir 100%.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3\u003eThe producer\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003eNeal and Judy Ibbotson planted their first Marlborough vineyards in 1978 and established Saint Clair Family Estate in 1994; the estate now owns 160 hectares across ten Marlborough sites and holds the Sustainable Wines of New Zealand certification. Pioneer Block 14 is the single Doctor's Creek vineyard southwest of Blenheim, named after the small stream that runs through its centre, on rich clay soils that moderate the vigour of the vines. The fruit was picked at full physiological ripeness and cold macerated for five days to draw out flavour and fix colour, then fermented with selected yeasts and hand plunged up to six times a day with 8% whole clusters in the mix; once dry, each batch was pressed and racked to French oak, a quarter of it new, for ten months and malolactic conversion before bottling.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3\u003eFood and drinking\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003eServe at 14–16°C. Good with duck, roast pork, mushroom risotto and a washed-rind cheese. Drink over the next five years; half an hour in a decanter opens it up.
