Richly textured and elegant rather than heavy, and without malolactic softening the citrus stays intact under the oak. Chardonnay 100%.

The producer

Far Niente takes its name from the Italian phrase 'Dolce Far Niente' - 'how sweet it is to do nothing'. Founded in 1885, it flourished until Prohibition and then stood abandoned for more than 60 years, until Gil Nickel bought it in 1979 and began the long work of restoring it; the estate now owns 80 hectares of vineyard across three Napa Valley sites. The Chardonnay draws on vineyards in Coombsville, a cool pocket in the hills east of the city of Napa that shares the climate of Carneros with less wind, on deep, well-drained gravelly loam and volcanic ash soils. Nicole Marchesi began fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel before racking most of the wine into French oak to finish, and it then aged for 11 months on its fine lees, with 52% of the barrels new and the rest used once.

Food and drinking

Serve at 10-12°C. Good with roast chicken, lobster with butter, veal in a cream sauce, or a mature Gruyère.
