Medium-bodied and smooth, the texture creamy from lees stirring, the acidity bright because the wine was kept from malolactic fermentation. Timorasso 100%.

The producer

The Vietti family has made wine at Castiglione Falletto in the Langhe since the 1800s, when Carlo Vietti founded the winery, and was among the first to bottle single-vineyard Barolo crus, beginning with Rocche di Castiglione in 1961; the Krause family bought the estate in 2016 and added new crus, including land in Colli Tortonesi. Derthona takes its name from the local dialect word for the town of Tortona, and the Timorasso, an ancient Piedmontese variety that was close to extinction in the 1980s, is hand-harvested from sites in and around Monleale facing southeast to southwest on calcareous marl. The grapes were destemmed and gently pressed, fermented with selected yeasts mostly in ceramic vessels with smaller portions in stainless steel and large oak casks, then matured for ten months in those same vessels with frequent batonnage; malolactic fermentation was avoided to hold the crisp style.

Food and drinking

Serve at 10-12C.
