The palate is vibrantly fruity and just off-dry, layered over a rich, creamy texture, with a firm backbone of acidity running into a very long, zesty finish — 100% Pinot Gris.

The producer

Rockburn began as Richard Bunton's hobby vineyard in 1991, when Central Otago was barely on the wine map; Malcolm Rees-Francis arrived from Felton Road as winemaker in 2005 and the estate holds Sustainable Wines of New Zealand certification. The Pinot Gris is hand-picked from two sites: the Parkburn terrace at 235 metres among the Block Mountain ranges, with hot dry summers and cold dry winters, and the cooler, cloudier Gibbston Valley on old glacial terraces above the Kawarau River. Each parcel is fermented cool in stainless steel on its gross lees at 15°C to keep the aromatics, and the ferment is stopped where sugar and acidity sit in balance; the parcels are then racked, blended and matured in older French oak for texture and weight.

Food and drinking

Good with rich or light seafood, Thai and other spiced dishes, roast pork and creamy cheeses; the touch of sweetness suits a bit of chilli. Under screwcap, drinking well now and mellowing over three to four years. Serve at 8–10°C.
