Pioneer Block 3 sits on deep, free-draining silt loam in the lower Wairau Valley, cooler and slower to ripen than much of the valley, with rows planted north-east to south-west at 43 degrees rather than north-south, so the south-facing side gives greener, herbal flavours and the north side more tropical ones. Picked in the cool of the evening at full flavour ripeness, the fruit was pressed off quickly to limit skin contact, settled and fermented cool in stainless steel with selected yeast under winemaker Stewart Maclennan, and this batch was singled out as a Pioneer Block wine for its intensity and complexity.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eFood and drinking\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGood with freshly shucked oysters, green-lipped mussels, goat's cheese and asparagus.
