Full-bodied for a non-vintage Brut, with a fine balance of power and finesse. Pinot Noir 55%, Chardonnay 30%, Pinot Meunier 15%.

The producer

Veuve Clicquot was founded in 1772 and made by Barbe-Nicole Clicquot-Ponsardin, widowed at 27 in 1805, who took over her husband's small house, ran the cellars herself and introduced techniques still in use today. Many of the house's vineyards across the top-rated crus of Champagne were bought in her time, and the bottles still age in the vaulted chalk cellars under Reims, parts of which the Romans dug two thousand years ago. Under chef de cave Dominique Demarville each grape variety, plot and cru is vinified separately before blending, and the house grows around 40% of its own fruit with sustainable viticulture across six press houses.

Food and drinking

Good as an aperitif and full enough for food: roast chicken, smoked salmon, mushroom dishes.
