2016 Marsanne ‘1927 Vines’, Tahbilk
About the Winery: Founded in 1860, Tahbilk is one of Australia’s most historic family-owned wineries and home to the world’s oldest Marsanne vines, planted in 1927. Located in the Nagambie Lakes region of Central Victoria, the estate benefits from a unique mesoclimate influenced by surrounding waterways and sandy loam soils over clay. Tahbilk’s ‘1927 Vines’ bottling is internationally recognised for its extraordinary longevity and distinctive evolution from a crisp, youthful white to a richly textured, honeyed and complex wine with bottle age. It stands as a benchmark expression of Marsanne worldwide.
Grape Variety: 100% Marsanne (from vines planted in 1927 — the oldest producing Marsanne vineyards in the world)
Appearance: Deep lemon-gold with bright, evolving hues, reflecting developing complexity while retaining clarity and vitality.
Aroma: Rich and expressive with notes of citrus oil, baked apple, quince and pear, layered with honeycomb, almond, chamomile and subtle lanolin. Underpinned by mineral depth and savoury complexity from bottle age and old-vine concentration.
Palate: Textured, layered and evolving with flavours of citrus peel, stone fruit, beeswax and toasted nuts. The acidity remains vibrant and linear despite the wine’s age, carrying a long, savoury, slightly saline finish. A hallmark example of Marsanne’s ability to age gracefully, developing richness while preserving structure and freshness.
Body: Medium to full-bodied with waxy, rounded texture and refined weight.
Acidity: Medium — balanced, supporting freshness while harmonising the wine’s evolved richness and savoury character.
Cellaring Potential: Outstanding — capable of ageing 15–25+ years from vintage. Continued development will bring deeper honeyed, nutty and lanolin complexity, maintaining structure and remarkable longevity.
Perfect Pairing: Roast chicken, buttery lobster, scallops, rich seafood dishes, white meats, mushroom risotto, aged hard cheeses and aromatic herbal dishes. Its evolved texture and savoury depth pair brilliantly with richer cuisine.
Serving Temperature: 10–12°C; slightly warmer (12–14°C) if enjoying in its mature phase to fully reveal honeyed and nutty complexity.
