2017-base Collection 242, Louis Roederer
About the Winery: Founded in 1776, Louis Roederer is one of Champagne’s last major family-owned maisons and the producer of the legendary Cristal. The estate is renowned for its pioneering commitment to sustainable and biodynamic viticulture, extensive vineyard holdings and meticulous vinification. “Collection” replaces the former Brut Premier, with each release numbered and anchored in a single base harvest. Collection 242 is built around the 2017 vintage, blended with réserve perpetuelle and oak-aged reserve wines to create depth, energy and precision—a contemporary expression of Roederer’s evolving house style.
Grape Variety: Approx. 42% Chardonnay, 36% Pinot Noir, 22% Meunier (typical composition for Collection 242)
Appearance: Bright pale gold with fine, persistent bubbles and crystalline clarity.
Aroma: Elegant and expressive with notes of ripe pear, citrus peel, baked apple and white flowers, supported by brioche, hazelnut, subtle spice and chalky minerality. Hints of almond cream and roasted notes reflect reserve wine component and partial oak ageing.
Palate: Fresh, precise and beautifully layered. Citrus and orchard fruit interplay with pastry notes, gentle spice and chalk-driven tension. The mousse is refined and energetic, while vibrant acidity and mineral backbone lead to a long, harmonious finish. A modern, terroir-focused Champagne showing both finesse and depth.
Body: Medium-bodied with elegant texture and poised richness.
Acidity: Medium to high — lively, focused and essential to ageing potential and structural precision.
Cellaring Potential: 5–8 years; developing richer brioche, toast, honeyed complexity and deeper mineral tones with short- to mid-term ageing.
Perfect Pairing: Ideal with oysters, scallops, sushi, smoked salmon, roast chicken, soft cheeses and refined canapés. Its balance of freshness and complexity suits both elegant seafood and versatile gastronomic dishes.
Serving Temperature: 8–10°C to emphasise finesse, mousse delicacy and mineral clarity.
