2017 Semillon ‘Elizabeth’, Mount Pleasant
About the Winery: Mount Pleasant is one of Australia’s most historic and celebrated producers, founded in 1921 in the Hunter Valley by legendary winemaker Maurice O’Shea. The estate has remained a benchmark for classic, age-worthy Hunter Valley Semillon, a style celebrated for its purity, low alcohol and remarkable longevity. Crafted from old-vine vineyards at the foot of the Brokenback Range, the ‘Elizabeth’ bottling is an iconic expression of this regional style—unoaked, delicate and built to evolve beautifully in bottle over decades.
Grape Variety: 100% Semillon
Appearance: Pale lemon with subtle green reflections—youthful brightness and excellent clarity typical of modern Hunter Semillon.
Aroma: Fresh lime, lemongrass and green apple lifted by hints of white florals, chamomile and delicate herbal notes. Early signs of bottle development reveal subtle honeycomb and lanolin complexity.
Palate: Crisp, focused and textural with refreshing acidity and flavours of citrus, orchard fruit and gentle mineral notes. As it opens, the wine shows emerging toasty, waxy and honeysuckle nuances that hallmark aged Hunter Semillon. Long, clean and elegant finish.
Body: Light-bodied with a fine, sleek texture that gains richness with age.
Acidity: High—vibrant, linear and essential to the wine’s long ageing trajectory.
Cellaring Potential: Outstanding—drink now or cellar 10–20+ years. Over time, flavours evolve toward honey, toast, wool, lemon curd and complex savoury depth while retaining freshness.
Perfect Pairing: Excellent with fresh oysters, prawns, grilled fish, sushi, Thai salads, goat cheese, shellfish pasta and lightly spiced Asian cuisine. Also superb with delicate white meats and creamy sauces due to its high acidity and developing texture.
Serving Temperature: 8–10°C to enhance freshness and aromatic precision; slightly warmer (10–12°C) as the wine gains bottle age.
