2018 Basket Press Shiraz, Rockford
About the Winery: Rockford is one of the Barossa Valley’s most cherished traditional producers, dedicated to preserving historic winemaking techniques and sourcing fruit from some of the region’s oldest, dry-grown vineyards. Founded by Robert O’Callaghan in 1984, Rockford has built a cult following for its artisanal, small-batch approach, heritage equipment and uncompromising commitment to Barossa identity. Basket Press Shiraz is the estate’s flagship wine, crafted using an old-fashioned basket press for gentle extraction and remarkable purity.
Grape Variety: 100% Shiraz, sourced from old, dry-grown Barossa vineyards.
Appearance: Deep ruby-purple with black core concentration and rich viscosity.
Aroma: Intense blackberry, plum and blueberry with layers of liquorice, dark chocolate, black pepper, smoked meats and warm spice, reflecting classic Barossa Shiraz character.
Palate: Powerful yet beautifully balanced with plush dark fruit, velvet tannins, vibrant acidity and savoury complexity. Notes of cocoa, spice and gentle oak lead to a long, warming, harmonious finish. A benchmark example of traditional Barossa Shiraz.
Body: Full-bodied and richly textured.
Acidity: Medium, providing lift and balance to the wine’s concentrated fruit.
Cellaring Potential: Outstanding ageing potential—drink now or cellar 10–20 years to develop further complexity and tertiary nuance.
Perfect Pairing: Grilled ribeye, slow-braised beef, barbecued meats, hearty stews and strong, mature cheeses.
Serving Temperature: 16–18°C; decant for 1–2 hours for full aromatic expression.
