Description

2019 Barbagalli Etna Rosso, Pietradolce

About the Winery: Pietradolce is situated on the northern slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, working almost exclusively with ancient, ungrafted vines rooted in volcanic sand and ash. The estate is celebrated for producing some of the finest expressions of Nerello Mascalese, combining alpine-like freshness with volcanic minerality. Barbagalli is the estate’s flagship cru, sourced from extraordinary pre-phylloxera vines over 100 years old in the “Contrada Rampante” area—one of Etna’s highest and most revered sites. These vines yield tiny quantities of intensely mineral, perfumed and profoundly elegant wine.

Grape Variety: 100% Nerello Mascalese (pre-phylloxera, ungrafted old vines)

Appearance: Luminous ruby with garnet reflections and fine transparency, typical of high-altitude Etna fruit.

Aroma: Red cherry, wild strawberry and pomegranate layered with violets, rose petal, crushed volcanic stone, sweet spice and hints of citrus peel. Intensely perfumed with extraordinary finesse and mineral lift.

Palate: Elegant yet structured with pure red fruit, taut acidity, ultra-fine tannins and a long, savoury, saline and mineral-driven finish. Combines Burgundian-like delicacy with the tension and energy of Etna’s volcanic soils. Profound depth and precision.

Body: Medium-bodied with layered complexity and exceptional finesse.

Acidity: High, giving crystalline freshness, structure and long ageing potential.

Cellaring Potential: Superb—enjoy now or cellar 12–18+ years for greater savoury depth, floral complexity and volcanic nuance.

Perfect Pairing: Herb-roasted lamb, duck breast, porcini and truffle dishes, tuna steak, Sicilian-style pork, and mature cheeses such as aged caciocavallo or pecorino.

Serving Temperature: 15–17°C; a short 30–45 minute decant enhances aromatic lift and mineral expression.
