Why this wine

Mazis sits directly alongside Chambertin itself and is widely held to be the closest in character to it, at a fraction of the price. Powerful and firmly structured, needing years. The value argument in Grand Cru Burgundy usually starts here.

Description

How it tastes

Violet, vanilla and black cherry with exceptional charm, then delicate toast beneath pure fruit and rich, dense tannin through a long finish. Pinot Noir, fermented with wild yeasts from the skins.

The producer

Mazis-Chambertin is one of nine Grands Crus in Gevrey-Chambertin, on a gentle east-facing slope adjoining Chambertin itself. The Naigeon family have been in the village more than 150 years and began making wine in 1890.

Food and drinking

Good with poultry & pork, risotto and cheese. Built for the long term — decades, if kept well. Serve at 15–16°C; decant 1–2 hours in youth to open aromatics and refine texture.
