Description
How it tastes
Red and black berry fruit with lemon, tobacco leaf and a touch of toasted oak, full and velvety on the palate. Sangiovese 90%, Merlot 10%.
The producer
Gran Selezione is Chianti Classico's top tier, requiring estate fruit and extended ageing. La Prima is grown on marl and clay and farmed sustainably. Castello Vicchiomaggio traces to the fifth century; the Matta family restored it after buying in 1964.
Food and drinking
Good with red meat, cheese and pasta. Drinking well now, with a decade or more ahead of it. Serve at 18°C.
