Why this wine

Gran Selezione is the top rung of Chianti Classico, introduced in 2013, requiring estate fruit and thirty months' ageing. Denser and more structured than Riserva. The best evidence that Chianti has moved a long way from the straw flask.

How it tastes

Red and black berry fruit with lemon, tobacco leaf and a touch of toasted oak, full and velvety on the palate. Sangiovese 90%, Merlot 10%.

The producer

Gran Selezione is Chianti Classico's top tier, requiring estate fruit and extended ageing. La Prima is grown on marl and clay and farmed sustainably. Castello Vicchiomaggio traces to the fifth century; the Matta family restored it after buying in 1964.
