Why this wine

Condrieu was down to eight hectares in the 1960s before Vernay replanted it, and Coteau de Vernon is the family's historic parcel. Viognier at its most serious — apricot and violets with real structure. Rare, and the reason the appellation still exists.

Description

How it tastes

Delicate yet opulent, with peach, dried apricot and a hint of liquorice, elegantly structured with racy acidity and complementary oak.

The producer

Georges Vernay was known as the King of Condrieu and is the reason the appellation survived — he drove its recovery through the 1950s when it was down to a handful of hectares. Coteau de Vernon is 2.5 hectares of old vines on south-facing granite terraces.

Food and drinking

Good with rich & creamy dishes, poultry & pork and cheese. Drinking well now, with a decade or more ahead of it. Serve at 12°C.
