2021 Condrieu ‘Coteau de Vernon’, Domaine Georges Vernay
About the Winery: Domaine Georges Vernay is widely regarded as the spiritual heart of Condrieu, credited with saving the appellation from extinction and setting the global benchmark for Viognier. Now led by Christine Vernay, the estate continues to craft wines of extraordinary purity, finesse and aromatic complexity. ‘Coteau de Vernon’ comes from the domaine’s historic, steeply terraced lieu-dit overlooking the Rhône. Planted on decomposed granite with exceptional exposure, the vineyard yields Viognier of rare elegance, tension and longevity — a reference point for the entire region.
Grape Variety: 100% Viognier
Appearance: Pale gold with luminous green highlights, reflecting youthful vibrancy and the crystalline purity typical of high-altitude, granite-grown Viognier.
Aroma: Intensely perfumed with aromas of apricot, white peach, jasmine and citrus blossom layered with wild herbs, honeysuckle, almond cream and delicate mineral notes. Subtle savoury complexity emerges with air, showcasing hallmark Vernay refinement.
Palate: Silky, pure and beautifully balanced. Ripe stone fruit, orange zest and floral notes intertwine with fine minerality and gentle spice. The wine shows remarkable tension for Viognier, with bright acidity carrying a long, graceful, polished finish. A masterclass in precision and aromatic depth, representing the pinnacle of Condrieu terroir.
Body: Medium to full-bodied with a sumptuous yet refined texture.
Acidity: Medium — providing lift, definition and exceptional balance for this aromatic variety.
