2022 Chardonnay, Lismore Estate Vineyards
About the Winery: Lismore Estate Vineyards, founded by Samantha O’Keefe in the Greyton foothills of the Riviersonderend Mountains, has become one of South Africa’s most admired boutique wineries. Remote, high-altitude vineyards (300–500m), extreme diurnal shifts and decomposed shale soils create ideal conditions for cool-climate styles. Known for elegance, purity and Burgundian finesse, Lismore’s Chardonnay is consistently regarded as one of the Cape’s finest expressions. The 2022 vintage reflects both precision and resilience following the estate’s rebuilding after the 2019 fire.
Grape Variety: 100% Chardonnay
Appearance: Bright lemon-gold with green glints, showing clarity and cool-climate luminosity from high-altitude vineyards.
Aroma: Citrus blossom, lemon curd and white peach layered with toasted hazelnut, struck flint, subtle vanilla and delicate floral notes. A refined aromatic profile balancing fruit purity with mineral tension and gentle barrel complexity.
Palate: Elegant yet concentrated with vibrant acidity and flavours of lemon zest, ripe pear and stone fruit. Fine oak integration adds creaminess, while a taut mineral backbone provides structure and drive. The finish is long, saline and focused, echoing top-tier cool-climate Chardonnay with South African energy and lift.
Body: Medium-bodied with a refined, silky texture and balanced richness.
Acidity: Medium to high — crisp, pure and essential to its cool-climate style and ageing potential.
Cellaring Potential: 5–7 years; developing deeper nutty complexity, honeyed tones and enhanced mineral definition while retaining freshness and balance.
