2022 Chardonnay ‘Roman Road’, Simpsons Wine Estate
About the Winery: Founded by Ruth and Charles Simpson, Simpsons Wine Estate has rapidly become one of England’s leading producers of premium still and sparkling wines. Located on the sunny, chalk-rich terroirs of the North Downs in Kent, the estate farms sustainably and focuses on expressing purity, precision and minerality through low-intervention winemaking. ‘Roman Road’ Chardonnay is sourced from a single vineyard planted on the same chalk seam that stretches into Champagne, delivering a wine of exceptional finesse, structure and cool-climate elegance.
Grape Variety: 100% Chardonnay
Appearance: Pale lemon with silver-green reflections and bright clarity, showing youthful freshness and a precise cool-climate profile.
Aroma: Citrus blossom, lemon zest and crisp green apple layered with white peach, almond, chalky minerality and subtle notes of brioche from partial oak and lees ageing. Lifted, pure and elegantly expressive of Kentish chalk soils.
Palate: Refined, vibrant and delicately textured with bright acidity and flavours of citrus, pear, green apple and a touch of stone fruit. A precise mineral backbone runs through the wine, complemented by gentle creaminess and understated oak. The finish is long, saline and beautifully balanced, showcasing England’s potential for world-class still Chardonnay.
Body: Light to medium-bodied with a sleek, elegant mouthfeel and fine chalk-driven tension.
Acidity: Medium to high — crisp, lively and essential to its cool-climate structure and drive.
Cellaring Potential: 4–6 years; developing added texture, light nutty notes and deeper mineral complexity with short-term ageing while retaining freshness.
Perfect Pairing: Ideal with grilled seabass, oysters, scallops, shellfish, roast chicken, goat cheese, vegetable tarts and delicate pasta dishes. Its minerality and fine acidity make it especially versatile with seafood and light cuisine.
Serving Temperature: 10–12°C to showcase aromatics, precision and chalky finesse.
