Why this wine

Gevrey produces the most structured reds in the Cote de Nuits, and even at village level the wines carry weight the rest of Burgundy doesn't. Firm and dark-fruited. The village to start with if you want to understand why Burgundy commands what it does.

Description

How it tastes

Refined, concentrated and structured, with wild red berry, cherry and raspberry and a hint of spice on a long, velvety finish. Vinified with wild yeasts and minimal sulphur.

The producer

Gevrey-Chambertin is the largest wine village in the Côte d'Or. Les Astrelles takes its name from astre, a star, and les parcelles — the mosaic of small plots the estate farms, planted at 3,500 vines per hectare.

Food and drinking

Good with poultry & pork, risotto and cheese. Drinking well now, with a decade or more ahead of it. Serve at 14–16°C; serve slightly cool to highlight finesse and aromatic clarity.
