2022 El Tiznado, Cuentaviñas
About the Winery: Cuentaviñas, led by José Gil, is one of Rioja’s most exciting new-wave producers, focused on micro-parcels, ancient vineyards and ultra-minimal intervention. Working almost entirely with old-vine, high-altitude sites in Rioja Oriental and Rioja Alavesa, the winery produces wines of purity, finesse and terroir transparency. “El Tiznado” comes from a single historic vineyard rooted in sandy, volcanic-influenced soils, yielding wines of remarkable lift, tension and aromatic definition.
Grape Variety: Predominantly Tempranillo with small amounts of Garnacha and native field-blend varieties (old vines)
Appearance: Bright ruby with violet hues and fine translucence, reflecting high-altitude freshness and old-vine concentration.
Aroma: Red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry layered with rose petal, crushed rock, dried herbs, citrus zest and subtle spice. Highly lifted and expressive with strong mineral energy.
Palate: Silky, vibrant and finely structured with pure red fruit, taut acidity, ultra-fine tannins and a long, saline, mineral-driven finish. Elegant and energetic—classic modern Rioja with Burgundian finesse and high-altitude tension.
Body: Medium-bodied with refined texture and precision.
Acidity: Medium to high, giving lift, freshness and long-term balance.
Cellaring Potential: 6–10 years; developing added savoury detail, floral depth and mineral complexity with time in bottle.
Perfect Pairing: Roast chicken, lamb chops, chargrilled vegetables, mushroom dishes, charcuterie and semi-cured cheeses such as Manchego or Idiazabal.
Serving Temperature: 15–17°C to highlight aromatic purity and minerality.
