Why this wine

Central Otago is the world's southernmost wine region, high, dry and continental, with big day-night temperature swings that give Pinot Noir dark fruit and firm structure. Rockburn are among its most consistent. The regional style at its most typical.

Description

How it tastes

Plum and black cherry with rich mocha and a hint of oak, the tannins supple and silky through a long finish. Cool-macerated up to four days, then a week's fermentation with daily plunging.

The producer

Rockburn takes its name from the rugged, rock-strewn landscape of Central Otago. Sitting on the 45th parallel, it shares a latitude and a climate with Burgundy. Richard Bunton started it as a hobby in 1991, when almost nobody was planting there.
