2022 Old Vine Chenin Blanc, Breedekloof, Olifantsberg
About the Winery: Olifantsberg, located on the Breedekloof’s rugged mountain slopes, is known for producing cool-climate, terroir-expressive wines shaped by altitude, wind and rocky soils. The estate farms sustainably, combining minimal intervention with precision viticulture. Their Old Vine Chenin Blanc comes from heritage bush vine parcels rooted in shale and sandstone, delivering naturally low yields, exceptional concentration and purity. Olifantsberg has become one of South Africa’s leading modern Chenin specialists, crafting wines with tension, texture and remarkable ageing potential.
Grape Variety: 100% Chenin Blanc (old bush vines)
Appearance: Pale lemon-gold with green reflections and brilliant clarity, showing freshness and concentration from old vines.
Aroma: Citrus blossom, lemon curd and green apple layered with quince, white peach, honeysuckle and a distinct mineral edge of crushed stone and wet slate. Subtle notes of wild herbs and gentle oak nuance add depth.
Palate: Vibrant and textural with bright acidity, flavours of citrus, pear and stone fruit, and a chalky mineral tension. The palate is layered, precise and energetic, finishing long and fresh with subtle pithiness and delicate oak integration.
Body: Medium-bodied with a balanced, silky texture and refined structure.
Acidity: Medium to high, providing lift, tension and ageability.
Cellaring Potential: 5–8 years; gaining complexity with honeyed, nutty and lanolin notes while retaining freshness and structure.
Perfect Pairing: Grilled prawns, sashimi, crab cakes, lemon-roast chicken, vegetable risotto, goat cheese salad and lightly spiced Asian dishes. Its acidity and texture pair exceptionally well with seafood and creamy dishes.
Serving Temperature: 8–10°C for maximum aromatic lift and precision.
