Powerful and full-flavoured, with baked fruits and hints of herbs, tobacco, and leather flowing into a dry, long, and elegant finish ‚¬” a benchmark expression of Baroloof legendary Cannubi vineyard.
About the Winery: Founded in 1956 by Michele Chiarlo and now managed by his sons Alberto and Stefano, Michele Chiarlo is one of Piedmontof most prestigious producers, crafting wines from Baroloof most celebrated crus including Cannubi and Cerequio. The familyof philosophy is to ‚¬œcapture the terroir‚¬ through sustainably cultivated, *Equalitas*-certified vineyards. With precise oak use and respect for vintage expression, Chiarloof Barolo and Barbera consistently receive 90+ point scores from leading critics including *Wine Advocate*, *James Suckling*, and *Wine Enthusiast*.
Grape Variety: 100% Nebbiolo ‚ sourced from the iconic *Cannubi Hill*, one of Italyof oldest and most revered crus, where a bottle dated 1752 still exists. Michele Chiarloof parcel lies at the hillof centre, uniquely terraced in collaboration with the University of Changin to maximise light exposure and terroir potential. The south-facing slope exceeds 20% incline and was planted in 1990. Soils combine Helvetian and Tortonian grey calcareous marl with 30% sand, rich in magnesium and iron, contributing to the vineyardof distinctive aromatic intensity and mineral depth.
Vintage: 2019 delivered a classic, late-ripening season. A mild winter and wet spring replenished soil reserves, while hot, dry conditions in June were balanced by timely July rains. Cooler, autumnal weather followed, leading to a slow harvest that produced small quantities of outstanding quality fruit. Wines from this vintage are noted for their purity, balance, and ageing potential.
Winemaking: Fermentation took place in 55-hectolitre oak barrels with 20 days of maceration on the skins. Gentle plunging ensured colour and tannin extraction while maintaining finesse, at controlled temperatures of 27‚30°C. The wine aged for two years in medium-sized oak casks, followed by 15‚16 months of bottle maturation before release, enhancing aromatic complexity and structure.
Appearance: Deep garnet red with brick reflections showing early evolution typical of Nebbiolo.
Aroma: Intense and aristocratic, with blackcurrant, liquorice, cinnamon, mint, and tobacco over subtle earthy tones.
Palate: Elegant and seductive with great structure and silky texture. Layers of dark fruit, spice, and minerality unfold over polished tannins, leading to a long, savoury finish marked by complexity and persistence.
Body: Full-bodied with refined tannic grip and harmonious balance.
Acidity: Fresh yet integrated, providing tension and structure for longevity.
Cellaring Potential: Excellent now but will evolve gracefully over 15‚20 years, gaining tertiary notes of truffle, cedar, and tobacco leaf.
Perfect Pairing: Ideal with osso buco, braised beef, or porcini mushroom risotto with Parmigiano Reggiano.
Serving Temperature: Serve at 17‚18°C to reveal depth and aromatics.
