Why this wine

Lismore is a single estate in Greyton, high and cool, built from nothing by an American who arrived in 2003 and lost the whole property to wildfire in 2019 before replanting. Peppery, restrained Syrah in a northern Rhone register. The estate's serious red.

How it tastes

Perfumed and bright: white pepper, garrigue herbs and crushed violets over blueberry and blackberry. Light and graceful yet structured — a crystal-clear expression of extreme cool-climate Syrah, elegant, mouthfilling and long. Syrah 100%.

The producer

Californian Samantha O'Keefe built Lismore from nothing in the foothills of the Sonderend mountains at Greyton, one of South Africa's coolest wine sites, and pioneered the Greyton ward that SAWIS later designated; Tim Atkin MW classed the estate a First Growth and named it Winery of the Year in his 2026 South Africa report. The Estate Reserve range shows what the place can do: very low-yielding, dry-farmed vines at 300 metres on decomposed shale over clay, where cool Februaries stretch ripening three to four weeks later than the rest of the Cape. 40% of the fruit was whole-bunch pressed, the juice cold-settled 48 hours, fermented with an extended 28-day maceration, and matured 11 months in 500-litre Burgundian barrels, 35% new. In 2022 a cool, wet spring delayed budburst by seven to ten days and flowering by about five, but fruit set was good and even, and a generally cooler season allowed gradual ripening, giving striking aromatics and balancing acidity.

Food and drinking

Good with roast lamb, duck, mushroom dishes and charcuterie. Drinking well now and will develop for eight to ten years. Serve at 15-17°C. Sealed with a DIAM closure. Suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
