Why this wine

Gevrey produces the most structured reds in the Cote de Nuits, and even at village level the wines carry weight the rest of Burgundy doesn't. Firm and dark-fruited. The village to start with if you want to understand why Burgundy commands what it does.

How it tastes

Refined, concentrated and structured, with real depth of flavour: wild red berries, cherry and raspberry, then a hint of spice on a long, velvety finish. Village Gevrey with the weight the name promises — 100% Pinot Noir.

The producer

Les Astrelles sits in the heart of Gevrey-Chambertin and takes its name from astre, a star, and les parcelles — the mosaic of small plots and lieux-dits the estate farms, each with its own character. Jean Marie and Isabelle Chapier took over the 11-hectare domaine from Pierre Naigeon in 2019 and have been investing since, with a new winery built for the 2024 vintage; the estate has been certified organic since 2019. The vines, mostly over 50 years old, are Guyot-trained on clay and limestone strewn with chalky pebbles, worked with ploughing, pruning and green harvests, and picked by hand at full ripeness. Cellar master Julien Millet, son of the former Comtes de Vogüé winemaker François Millet, ferments with indigenous yeasts, keeps sulphur low and matures the wine 15 months in French oak barriques.

Food and drinking

Good with poultry and pork, risotto and cheese. Drinking well now, with a decade or more ahead of it. Decant for an hour if opening young; serve at 14–16°C, slightly cool, to highlight finesse and aromatic clarity. Suitable for vegetarians; not suitable for vegans.
