How it tastes
Powerful and complex, with yellow fruit, finely roasted almond and citrus over a chalky freshness. The palate is soft and juicy yet energetic and intense, with an elegant, powerful texture and a sappy, saline finish — 60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay.
The producer
Louis Roederer inherited the house in 1833 and took the then-unusual view that great wine depends on soil, buying Grand Cru land while rival houses bought grapes; it remains independent and family-owned, now in its seventh generation. Roederer holds 200 hectares across Aÿ, Verzenay, Verzy, Avize and Cramant, plots rated 95–100% on the cru scale, and around 22% of the estate is farmed organically or biodynamically. Cristal is made only from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the ten most celebrated crus, each parcel pressed on site and vinified separately in small stainless-steel tanks that cellar master Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon's team taste daily; for the first time since 2002, all 45 eligible plots of vines over 20 years old contributed to the blend.
Food and drinking
Good with seafood, rich and creamy dishes and poultry and pork. Built for the long term — decades, if kept well — but already showing its class. Serve at 8–10°C. Suitable for vegetarians; not suitable for vegans.
