Why this wine

Pauillac is the most concentrated stretch of great Bordeaux, and Batailley has long been the estate offering a genuine taste of it without the name premium. The 2017 falls between two celebrated vintages, which suppressed prices and produced a wine approachable earlier than a classed growth usually is.

How it tastes

Cedar, sweet blackcurrant and raspberry coulis with fruitcake depth and smoky tobacco and liquorice. Full-bodied with abundant ripe tannin. Cabernet Sauvignon 80%, Merlot 17%, Petit Verdot 3%, aged in French oak with 60% new.

The producer

Batailley is among the oldest estates in Pauillac, its name taken from a battle of the Hundred Years' War fought on the plateau running down to Château Latour. Sixty hectares dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, and the flagship of the Castéja family.

Food and drinking

Good with red meat, lamb, game and cheese. Built for the long term — decades, if kept well. Serve at 16–18°C; consider decanting for 1 hour.

However many bottles. Carefully packed, dispatched Wednesdays and Fridays.
