Why this wine
This is Rioja made at the scale of a Burgundian grand cru: 1.54 hectares of bush vines averaging eighty years old, yielding barely a quarter of what the region permits, and bottled in tiny quantity. Where the classical houses build weight through years in American oak, El Camino uses large French barrels only to carry malolactic conversion, leaving the old-vine fruit and the chalk of Rioja Alavesa exposed. It is the modern end of Rioja at its most serious, and the range would be poorer without a wine that argues for it.
