Why this wine

Carraovejas broke Ribera convention by blending Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot into Tempranillo, and by farming steep slopes above Penafiel that most producers had ignored. The result is darker and more structured than classical Ribera. Two vintages side by side make the vintage effect unusually easy to read.

Description

How it tastes

Black cherry, ripe plum and blueberry layered with violet, cedar, vanilla and subtle graphite spice. Full-bodied and silky with dense dark fruit, fine-grained tannins and a mineral, balsamic finish. All tasting notes and recommendations are provided as guidance only and may vary by vintage and personal preference.

The producer

Founded in 1987 on the slopes above Penafiel Castle, Pago de Carraovejas is part of the Alma Carraovejas group. The estate's limestone-rich vineyards and precision viticulture yield concentrated, pure-fruited wines that combine power with poise. Alma Carraovejas is Tempranillo-led with small portions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, matured in a mix of French and American oak.
