Why this wine
Hawke's Bay Syrah sits between the northern Rhone and Australia, with the perfume of the one and none of the heat of the other, and the Gimblett Gravels is where New Zealand does it best. A tenth of the fruit goes in as whole bunches and the wine spends fifteen months in French oak, coming out floral and structured at 13%. Few New Zealand reds are this aromatic at this weight.
