How it tastes
Lemongrass, white peach and lanolin with a hint of struck match. Citrus peel leads a palate of immediate richness and weight: full-bodied, textural and structured, but with real finesse. Sauvignon Blanc 75%, Semillon 25%.
The producer
Four generations of Glovers farmed dairy at Dillon's Point before Owen and Wendy Glover pioneered vines there in the 1980s; their son Ben, a winemaker since 1995 and a 2001 Len Evans scholar, now runs the estate, and Spoke is his collaboration with Liam Steevenson MW. The Brink is a single vineyard planted in 1992 on the Renwick terrace in the mid-Wairau, organic from the start and one of Marlborough's oldest organic sites, on silt, loam and clay; it was about to be ripped out and replanted with young Sauvignon when Ben bought it — saving it from the brink. The sorted fruit was whole-bunch pressed straight into French oak puncheons, 20% new, for wild-yeast fermentation and wild malolactic. Hot days and cool nights in 2021 kept the acidity while flavours built.
